Live Oaks, and What They Do to a Photograph

Why They Work

A mature live oak throws a canopy wide enough to cover a ceremony and low enough to sit in frame behind it. Nothing else available here does both.

The light underneath is the real gift: bright but diffused, with none of the hard overhead sun that ruins outdoor portraits between eleven and four.

The Dappling Problem

That same canopy produces dappled light, which is the one thing outdoor wedding photographers genuinely dread. Faces come out half-lit and half-shadowed and there is no fixing it afterwards.

The solution is position rather than equipment. Full shade under the tree, or full open sky beyond it, and never the patchy edge between the two. Say this to your photographer early and they will love you for it.

Do Not Assume You Can Hang Anything From It

Live oaks are protected in a great many jurisdictions and venues are frequently prohibited from fixing anything to the limbs.

Ask before you plan a hanging installation. The answer is often no, and the arborist's opinion outranks the florist's.
